Jasper Morris MW, renowned Burgundy expert, analyzed and blind‑tasted the 2021 vintageat the Burgfest tasting
The Burgfest tasting
2021 was a notoriously difficult growing season, yielding a small crop of lighter wines. Pessimists saw fragility and limited ageing potential, while optimists particularly importers framed it as a return to classical Burgundy: fragrant wines with lower alcohol levels.
In this tasting, the reds proved less fragile than expected. The wines were divided into flights by appellation—Beaune, Volnay, Pommard,
Corton, Nuits‑St‑Georges, Vosne‑Romanée (including Grand Cru), Clos Vougeot, Chambolle‑Musigny (including Grand Cru), Morey‑St‑Denis (including Grand Cru), and Gevrey‑Chambertin (including Grand Cru).
Overall, three‑star wines (114) outnumbered four‑star (90), with only four five‑star awards granted. This result was in line with, or slightly ahead of, expectations given the extreme challenges of the 2021growing season. Most wines are nearly ready to drink now and will show best within five years.
✨ We are proud that the 2021 Château de Meursault Pommard Clos des Epenots 1er Cru received an excellent review from Jasper Morris MW:
"A concentrated fresh purple, with plenty of energy on the nose. A clear fresh red berry fruit emerges, with some Griotte cherries, supple fruit, even quite succulent. The Château de Meursault team have managed to get a layer of velvet on to the bone structure. There is a fair amount of new oak to finish but it in no way interferes with the fruit." - 92 points, Jasper Morris MW
